Siemen’s expressed in their
2017 Sustainability Information Statement that “the aim is to improve the prosperity and quality of life
of all people whilst staying within the limits of the planet.” Within this
informational analysis of the company’s sustainability efforts are a set number
of goals which have been created to assist the United Nation’s Sustainable
Development Goals. They have been classified into 3 categories, high, medium,
and low impact goals. These are all rated at a global perspective by Siemens;
this rating system may differentiate in scope throughout different subsidiaries
throughout the world, however, these goals are the overall objectives to strive
for. The high impact goals relate with products and solutions. Medium impact
goals correlate to responsible business practices, compliance, and supply chain
management. Finally, the low impact goals influence the customer industries. They
have specifically highlighted 5 high and 6 medium impact goals. The high impact
goals include: ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,
make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable,
ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all,
take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, build resilient
infrastructure promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster
innovation.
Siemen’s
sustainability efforts have been recognized by Forbes as the world’s most
regarded company. Siemens scored 86 points on the Dow Jones Sustainability
World Index. The Carbon Disclosure Project graded them at a A- in their climate
aspect and a B in water assessment. Corporate Knights rated them as number 1 in
the 2017 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations.
Siemens
has committed to becoming carbon neutral by the year of 2030. So far in their
efforts to achieve this, Siemens has effectively reduced its CO2 emissions by
27% since 2014. They practice what they preach by utilizing their own principle
of sustainably producing energy.
A
well-known CSR initative on Siemen’s behalf, is their $90 million investment
into their U.S. employees to help them advance in their development and
education in STEM programs through their Siemens Foundation. The Siemens Foundation
also provides scholarship opportunities and learning programs.
